How To: Automatically Sync Podcasts with your iOS 5 iDevice
January 12, 2012
Heya! A friend posed a question today about automatically downloading podcasts to their iPhone. It’s a pretty straightforward process, but there are a few things you need to do to make this happen. I decided to help her out, but thought it would be a good opportunity to post Explorabam.com’s first “how to”.
First, a couple disclaimers. First, your Podcasts should have a subscription URL, or be available through iTunes; most are. Second, you’ll need Wifi in your home. Third, iTunes needs to be running for podcasts to automatically download. Lastly, you’ll need an iOS 5 capable device from the list below.
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 4S
- iPod Touch 3G
- iPod Touch 4G
- iPad 2
Now onto the instructions!
1. Subscribe to your podcasts. If the podcast is available in iTunes, click the ‘subscribe’ button like you would to download an app or song. If it’s not available in iTunes, they’ll usually provide a subscription URL which is useful for manually subscription by clicking ‘subscribe to podcast’ from the advanced menu in iTunes.
2. Make sure your phone is on iOS 5. Just plug it in and make sure it’s up to date with the latest software. (Bonus: future software updates on iOS 5 can all be performed wirelessly as well!)
3. With the iPhone plugged into your computer, there should be a link in iTunes for phone settings, etc. Click on the link, and on the Summary page (first ‘tab’) you’ll find an option to sync the phone over wifi. Enable this.
4. Still in the iPhone configuration, you should now have a Podcast tab. Here you can choose whether to sync podcasts, and criteria to filter what is synced.
